February 2, 2007 Klondike Derby on Mt Taylor

One good thing about having so much snow in January was snow for the Klondike Derby. Our Venturing crew was in charge of the Klondike activities this year. Sam was supposed to do an interview for the University of New Mexico's Regents' Scholarship Program at the same time as the event. Sam asked the committee if he could interview another time. Sam was one of 40 finalists for the Regents' Scholarship! The interview committee let Sam interview the day before so that he could participate in the Klondike Derby. Sam ran the events. Here is a couple pictures of him giving instructions:

Our crew owns this gigantic army tent, which we set up. When Sam was giving instructions to the other crews in charge of the activity stations, I smelled something burning. A few seconds later this adult leader ran out of the tent on fire! He had been too close to a propane lantern. He was fine.

Sam was a good example to the other scouts. Here he is all bundled up for the day's events:

Here is a picture of Dan Collette teaching the scouts how to trap small animals. Dan is Crista's dad (see previous Winter Ball post).
