May 26, 2014: Memorial Day Hike to Cabezon Peak!

May 26th: On this Memorial Day, Mike and I decided to check out Cabezon Peak by hiking it! He packed a backpack with plenty of water and snacks, and then we drove out to Bernalillo for hearty breakfast burritos before heading out to our destination, which was ten miles past San Ysidro, NM.

Cabezon Peak seen from the turnoff
Are you sure this isn't "Nipple Mountain"?

We were anxious to begin the hike when we saw this sign
The Peak and the trail seen in the background
This doesn't look so hard to climb
The landscape is a different kind of beautiful that we both loved
And plenty of wildflowers along the way
There I am heading up the trail. It was chilly but warmed up fast.
A closer view of the Peak
Landscapes seen from our climb
The sky and clouds were magnificent!
Other nearby peaks and landscapes
Here I am heading up a steep and rocky climb
This is the first "chimney" to get through before you can make it to the top
Here's the second and most difficult chimney to get through
My outdoorsy man enjoying this new hiking experience
Such a beautiful area! We made it at least halfway up because
of that second chimney. Next time we'll take ropes and lasso our way to the top!
Looking down from the 2nd chimney
The most difficult part of the climb was up this 2nd chimney
Mike made it up, but I stayed and waited for his return
Looking up towards the top of the chimney
On our descent from the 2nd chimney, looking out over the landscape
Looking down from the 2nd chimney
Endless rocks we climbed
Leaving this lovely, uninhabited area
Goodbye Cabezon Peak! We'll visit again another time
On our way through San Ysidro, we passed cows on the side of the road
Some even crossed the road from one side to the other
