June 23, 2019: The Roman Colosseum

June 23rd: The Roman Colosseum is amazing--even though it's not a spiritually uplifting place when you think about what it was used for. But the fact that it was built around 70 AD kinda blows you away. We waited for over two hours to get in, but we met a nice family that we hung out with afterwards. We even treated them to dinner, and then they treated us to dessert!

Exterior models of the Colosseum are amazing

Pottery dating back to the time of the Colosseum
A picture of the Tower of Babel from the Bible
Building with a similar look of the Colosseum
A depiction of an audience inside the Colosseum
A system of stone pulleys used to lift the gates and trap doors
These models of the interior of the Colosseum are awesome!

New friends we made while waiting in line for tickets to the Colosseum
Candlor, Marlene, and sons Aiden and Aarec from Texas
but stationed in Germany with the Air Force

Original stairs still intact
Much of the stairs in ruin
All of the stairs in ruin
Looking out the "window" opening from inside the Colosseum
Great framed shot of the mini Arc de Triumph
Iron bars used in the Colosseum
Crumbling bricks and stones in the Colosseum walls

In this photo, you can see where stairs used to be along the wall
One of many marble (or cement) columns
Original marble floors inside the Colosseum
This building is colossal!

A pretty spot of color amongst ruins
Where Mike and I had dinner with our new friends

Inside the tiny lift of our hotel
Dusty elevator and carpet!
Looking down the stairwell from our floor
We will NOT stay at this hotel again--really awful
